I would hate to see them go. And it would be nice to see the show lighten up a bit here and there. I remember when I first started watching in 99 it wasn't as bad as this. I mean we finally got something happy happening but it was because Sonia and Martin were leaving. When couples or people are happy they never get screen time and I think that it would be nice to have it.

I think that's why Corrie has stood the test of time - it has a lot of humour in it. And it is nice to laugh at a soap every now & again. I know Face will be with me on that comment!!

damn straight I am! It's a real skill to be able to bring comedy and serious issues together well in any drama, but they do it brilliantly and I can't remember when they last had to put a notice at the end saying "If you've been...

'Do another 25 new ones,' jury hears Pickton saying
This story includes disturbing details

Last Updated: Tuesday, February 6, 2007 | 3:39 PM ET
CBC News

The jury in the Robert William Pickton murder trial has heard a jubilant Pickton tell an undercover police officer that he wanted to "make it an even 50" before going on to "do another 25 new ones."

The jury in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster on Tuesday watched a videotaped jail cell conversation between the officer and Pickton. The exchange was filmed immediately after the Port Coquitlam pig farmer was returned to his cell following his interrogation in February 2002.

During the video, a guard brings him dinner and Pickton is unfailingly polite, thanking the guard and delivering coffee to his cellmate. Pickton perks up as the RCMP officer begins to talk about his own charges for attempted murder — a story concocted as part of his role as a cell plant. "But you're nothing like mine," says Pickton. As he spoons up his dinner, Pickton gestures with one hand to five fingers, and then zero. "Five-zero. Fifty?" the undercover officer says in disbelief, and asks...

I find it quite odd that the guy who turned himself into the police got the most severe sentence, but from the sounds of things it's just good that they didn't carry out their plan. Another thing that got me about it is that there was a guy found guilty today of 3 actual rapes around Bristol and he only got 8 years.

Don't know about over there, but if it were in the states, that wouldn't shock me one bit. There is no logic to sentencing anymore.

Briefcase 'that changed the world'
By Angela Hind
BBC Radio 4's The World in a Briefcase

In the summer of 1940, the war with Germany was at a critical stage. France had recently surrendered and the Luftwaffe was engaged in a concerted bombing campaign against British cities. The United Kingdom was being cut off from the Continent, and without allies to help her, she would soon be near the limit of her productive capacity - particularly in the all important field of electronics.

On the morning of 29 August, a small team of the country's top scientists and engineers, under the direction of Sir Henry Tizard and in conditions of absolute secrecy, was about to board a converted ocean liner. With them they carried possibly the most precious cargo of the war - a black japanned metal deed box containing all of Britain's most valuable technological secrets. They were on their way to America - to give them away. This high-powered team included representatives from the Army, Navy and Air Force, along with specialists in the new technologies of war.

Earlier that morning, radar expert, Dr...

From Afghanistan to Iraq: Connecting the Dots with Oil
By Richard W. Behan, AlterNet. Posted February 5, 2007.

An in-depth look at the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the events leading up to them, and the players who made them possible.

In the Caspian Basin and beneath the deserts of Iraq, as many as 783 billion barrels of oil are waiting to be pumped. Anyone controlling that much oil stands a good chance of breaking OPEC's stranglehold overnight, and any nation seeking to dominate the world would have to go after it. The long-held suspicions about George Bush's wars are well-placed. The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were not prompted by the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington. They were not waged to spread democracy in the Middle East or enhance security at home. They were conceived and planned in secret long before September 11, 2001 and they were undertaken to control petroleum resources.

The "global war on terror" began as a fraud and a smokescreen and remains so today, a product of the Bush Administration's deliberate and successful distortion...
