Reid backs temporary increase in U.S. troops

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid said on Sunday he would support a short-term increase in U.S. troop numbers in Iraq being weighed by President George W. Bush if it is part of a broader withdrawal plan.

Bush has been talking with experts about a new Iraq strategy and a short-term increase in American troops to help make Baghdad more secure is one idea that has been presented to him.

"If it's for a surge, that is, for two or three months and it's part of a program to get us out of there as indicated by this time next year, then, sure, I'll go along with it," Reid, who will become the majority leader when Democrats take control of the Senate next month, told ABC's "This Week" program.

But fellow Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts, when told of Reid's comments, disagreed.

"I respect Harry Reid on it, but that's not where I am," he said. "The generals who have testified before the Armed Services Committee think that we would add to being a crutch for the Iraqi civilian government in not making the right judgments and decisions. I think that is a...

I saw this on the news and was really pleased to see this. When it comes to China and any living creatures other than humans, they usually have them on their dinner plates, so it's nice to see for once they actually cared for the creatures well being.

Actually, they don't have respect for humans either as they execute prisoners so they can sell their organs to people from other countries for big bucks.....and take the organs without the consent of the prisoners.

Anyway regarding the original story....good on the guy.

Interesting subject but I'm not entirely sure about the accuracy. Smile

I'm not suggesting that we are not as humans contributing to it...

But I can't help but think about times such as the ICE AGE, there was nobody about taking down records to say that things sped up for about 50 or 100 years & then slowed down a lil' before (or after) the big freeze.

We do know from digging up 'layers' from all over the world that areas freeze over, heat up, dry out, become flooded etc...
They say "within" a certain time frame, but they can't say exact dates... to them a time frame can be a thousand years off & they still feel it accurate.

But they can be that accurate through dendrochronological means. Dendrochronology entails checking the rings inside frozen or otherwise preserved trees for evidence of growth spurts which indicate the weather at a specific time. (thanks to Time Team for that bit of knowledge!).

I find that looking for all these other reasons such as the planet shifting its axis is basically ignoring the facts which are in front of you. There is only so...

Man leaves fortune to Los Angeles
Author: janbo1960 :: Posted: Fri Dec 15, 2006 11:39 pm
A 79-year-old man has reportedly given more than $500,000 to the people of Los Angeles in his will, but snubbed his five siblings by leaving them only $US1 each.

The Los Angeles Times reported Theodore DiFiore died in 1990 leaving most of his assets, which included an old gas filling station and an auto repair shop, to the people of Los Angeles.

"I think he was just a ornery guy ... and why he chose the city of Los Angeles, I don't have any idea," said lawyer Robert Pasquinelli, who handled the case.

"It was an interesting probate in that for years the city didn't know what to do with this."

The Times reports Mr DiFiore's properties in San Jose were run-down and needed renovation before being sold, and that is the reason Los Angeles is only getting the money now.
