EE: Preety leaving and someones' taken ill

EastEnders actress Babita Pohoomull, who plays beautician Preeti Choraria in the soap, is leaving the show early next year, it has been announced.

Pohoomull joined the programme just over a year ago, since which her character has briefly had relationships with Sean and Bradley.

Show producers decided to let the character go after she failed to make an impression on the audience.

A BBC spokesperson said: "Preeti will leave Albert Square in early 2008. We wish Babitha all the best in her career."

Preeti will leave Walford after Mickey rejects her and she decides that there is nothing left for her in Albert Square.

Pat feels a bit poorly

SPARE a thought for Pam St Clement. EastEnders' Pat has been struck down with a mystery condition and will be off until the end of the year.

Pam, currently battling on screen to reunite grandson Steven with his (not real) dad Ian Beale, became unwell after taking a holiday last month.

An EastEnders' bod tells me:
"She is poorly and so we have given her time off to recuperate. We hope she will be back filming in January, and on screen in February."

Her absence means that a few storylines have had to be hastily rewritten. My secret squirrel reveals:

"Some of the plots are being changed. Pat was going to have a bit of a fling with a handyman, but that's been scrapped now."

Bet he's absolutely gutted...

I will miss Preeti. I think the reason she has never made an impression is they never really gave her anything to work with. She was in the background a lot. I thought the character was sweet, innocent and funny. It's a shame really.

That is terrible news about Pam St Clement. I hope she does get better. Although I won't miss Pat having another sexual encounter.

True about Preeti - she was always given crappy lines and situations. I like her and I'm sure they could do more work with her than the girl they just brought in as the Post Office owner's daughter.

And Pat - OMG one more sexual encounter and she may well just seize up. How old is that woman??

Preeti was one of those characters, which they do a lot on Eastenders, she started out one way and then they completely changed her. In the end I guess they didn't know what to do with her.

She started out as this very successful, together stylist, then soon as she started at Booty's she was an airhead.

I'm sure a lot of it is in their scripts, but I never got into her character. She was always so forlorn looking and never really seemed to be "alive" so to speak. I didn't like her, but it may not have been her after all.

I liked Preeti but they didn't write her any storylines so viewers weren't given the chance to respond to her. I'd rather Preeti stayed and the Masood girl left.
