Hanukkah (which means "consecration" or"dedication") takes place over eight days. It celebrates the miracle that took place during the rededication of the Second temple after the Maccabee Rebellion.

According to the legend, when the Jews when to re-dedciate the Temple to God there was only enough oil to burn in the eternal flame for one day. It takes eight days for the oil to be blesses and become consecrated oil. The miracle was the oil for one day lasted for eight days, enough time to bless the new oil for the eternal flame. Ever since that event the Jews have celebrated that miracle.
