Cilla to leave for Vegas, baby

With a face like a bulldog licking a nettle and her history of cruel scheming, there's not much about Corrie's Cilla Battersby that brings to mind Anna Nicole Smith. But Coronation Street scriptwriters are to take inspiration from the tragic Hollywood actress to create a storyline that sees the devious mum run off with a rich old fogey.
Flame-haired Cilla, played by Wendi Peters, will leave the series later this year - and according to The Sun, her exit will be one that will leave old enemy Janice green with envy. Insiders at the soap told the paper that Cilla will depart on the arm of an old codger - and go to Las Vegas. The feisty Northern lass meets doddery Frank when she gets the boot from the chip shop and ends up working in a care home.
And just like Anna Nicole, who wed 89-year-old oil billionaire J Howard Marshall when she was just 26, Cilla falls helplessly in love - although whether it's with his body or his wallet remains to be seen. Frank will be played by Keith Clifford, who has previously appeared in the show as Les Battersby's dodgy mate, Charlie West. Some might say Cilla doesn't deserve a happy ending.
