I agree with you faceless. I don't quite understand why they have been kept under wraps for such a long time. I also don't think this is a big thing as it won't really yield any great new insight! I wouldn't be surprised if there were new insights as a result of these files being released. It's just too early to tell.
On one hand, I can see how some victims might not want the grim details of their treatment to be public knowledge, but I'd doubt they'd been consulted. The decision was apparently made on their behalf. And others would probably not object in the interest of it contributing to the historical lesson.
