Six-month-old Rottweiler cross Peggy switched on the kitchen hob as she tried to reach a chocolate cake intended for Tony Shaw's 46th birthday.
As smoke and flames spread around the kitchen Peggy fled to the bathroom of Tony and Lorraine Shaw's house at East Sleekburn, Northumberland.
Firefighters dragged her out but gave her up for dead until a neighbour saw signs of life - and she was revived with an oxygen mask and 45 minutes of heart massage.
Tony, who was at a school meeting with wife Lorraine when the fire started, said Peggy's outline marked in soot could be seen in the bath.
Lorraine, 39, said: "The kitchen has been destroyed but we're grateful she is alive."
