Get out of my room!

Post by Skylace »

More and more couples in the US are ordering separate master bedrooms in their new homes to help ensure a more harmonious marriage, research suggests.

A survey by the National Association of Home Builders has predicted that by 2015, 60% of custom-built homes will have two master bedroom suites.

The quest for better rest is behind the trend as experts say the lack of decent sleep can cause marital tension.

The option of having separate rooms has often improved marriages, they say.

Gopal Ahluwalia, of the National Association of Home Builders, said the trend was a "market-driven demand that's going to continue".

Separate bedrooms have often been taken as a sign of a failing relationship, but for many people they appear to be becoming a practical necessity.

Snoring, night-time visits to the bathroom, child-care requirements and shift-working can deprive couples of the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep per night.

The situation has reportedly become more acute as gender roles have changed - with both men and women juggling work and childcare duties.

Families expert, Stephanie Coontz, told the New York Times there were many couples "confident enough that they have a nice marriage, but they don't particularly like sleeping in the same room".

"I don't think it says anything about their sex lives," she said.

Nevertheless, some builders call the extra room a "flex suite" to avoid any embarrassment.

The trend is not restricted to the upper end of the market, the newspaper says.

Lana Pepper of St Louis said she had switched things around in her new apartment to cope with a restless husband.

"My husband is still alive. I would have killed him," she said.

If it works for them that's great. However, I love sleeping next to my husband as he keeps the bed warm, even without farting! :bedtime:

Without farting?

Reading that further assures me that my stuffed animals are fine enough for me! They don't snore, fart or take up much room

 Yep, which is very nice since some of my girlfriends husbands thinks that's the best way to warm the sheets or decide that a Dutch Oven is the height of humor! :crazed:

I think this is a great idea. I think everyone should have one room that is solely theirs to put their treasures in. I WISH hubby and I had separate bedrooms!!! I do like "sleeping" with him but not sleeping with him ... he snores so loud and sprawls across the bed. ... plus he uses MY pillow - EW! and puts stuff on top of MY dresser! Drives me nuts!!!

This might be a solution for you guys. I mean, you're in a house of men anyway! You need your own place! :o

I reckon I'm blessed. I haven't either problem so I suppose I can count me lucky stars :dancer:

However I can hear my flatmate let the odd one go....even with my bedroom door closed!

LOL! My sympathies!

I can see some merit in this. I frequently sleep on the couch because I work such odd hours and like to fall asleep watching tv, etc. My husband snores alot (like right now in his chair!!!!) and if I go to bed after him, I can't fall asleep if he's snoring. Or some times he wakes me up with it......sometimes with my migraines, I can't stand the sound... totally not his fault and why should he move when I'm the one who can't sleep.

That being said, I'm with Sky on the fact that there's nothing better than snuggling up the hubby! And you're right.... he does keep the bed warm! Between him and the dog, it's like a furnace!!!!
