Chainsaw-Equipped Submarise Drone Fells Underwater Trees

Sawfish_1A submarine with chainsaws has many potential uses, but the official one shall be the logging of trees submerged by dam reservoirs or other artificial lakes.

Take, for example, China's Three Gorges Dam, which has generated a snaking body of water 370 miles long and placed millions of trees below the waterline, where it is difficult to harvest them by traditional means. Furthermore, waterlogged wood is very heavy, adding to the cost of transportation and reducing the number of viable commercial applications.

Triton Logging aims to turn the tide with the Sawfish, a 3.5-ton logging drone that hugs the submerged bole, attaches flotation devices to it, and then deploys the saw.

Triton estimated that there are 300 million submerged trees in planet Earth's artificial lakes, a potential harvest worth $50 billion.
