Nicholas Winterton - first class prat ..

Having travelled first and second class to and from London and Hannover, I can only say that I wouldn't consider doing it again in cattle.

I couldn't do the long and arduous trip without the complementaries, and the mutterings of fellow passengers complaining about the temperature of their (free) shampoo above the cries of our two year old ...

In fairness most of them loved our two year old. Didn't bump into ol' Nick, or any of his contemptoraries. Shame really. :)

Me and a pal were travelling down to London once in the late 80s - we'd booked our tickets in advance, but they'd overbooked the 2nd class carriages, so we ended up being put in 1st...

My pal was a fairly tough looking character and there were immediate tuts of disapproval from one guy that such ruffians would be allowed to sit near him... he soon learned to regret that tutting when my pal started eating some cooked chicken pieces his mum had made for him. Not so bad you might think, but he wasn't a fan of the skin, so he threw it up in the air and stuck it to the celiing of the carriage...

That ruined the arrogant tutter's entire journey - result!

Of course, I would never dream of doing such a thing myself...

Deutschbahn do a special 99 € deal from anywhere in Germany to London 1 st class.

You save the extra that a second class ticket gets you from the free food and drinkzz on the way. You get a great menu ... Second is 49€.

We didn't know that it would be free, not having dared to encroach on the ol' gits before, otherwise we'd really have gone for it.

As I say, the most of 'em were fine, and with the deal that's going I wouldn't go 2nd again, at that price. There is no way that I'd justify paying the 1st class rate at normal prices though.

The way back on this trip was second class, so no freebies, no extra leg room, and OH God the smell, the people, the activity ........
