I guess we will just have to agree to disagree on this one. I don't see any reason why I can't be proud to be American and be proud to be a member of the world community too. I don't see why I have to choose one or the other.

If I can only be proud of things that I have had a hand in the outcome of, then I can't be proud of my 7 year old nephew's step over move and two goals from yesterdays game or of my brother and sister in law in the way that they are working together to raise their family. I can't even be proud of the only option that Face gave me and be proud of the work Spurs did to win yesterday. But I am. The definition of pride does say a sense of acomplishment in ones self, but it also says that it is something that causes a person or persons to be proud, the example given is an artists family being proud of the art.

Again, I think another part of the question is the extreme to which one is proud. Extremists ruin everything.

Of course you can feel pride for others' accomplishments. But would you ever say you're proud of your nephew for being American?

I think there's a difference between accomplishments and accidents of birth.

I would say I was proud of him for being a good American...but I see your point. Again, I understand your points, but we will just have to live with the fact that we have different opinions on this one! :)
