Shock jocks: Tuning in to Radio GaGa
As one US shock jock is banned from Britain, Giles Hattersley asks why millions love to listen to the ranterati

Last week Jacqui Smith forgot the first rule of dealing with shock jocks: never take the bait. On Tuesday the home secretary unveiled 16 names from a list of 22 undesirables the government has recently banned from entering the UK: Ku Klux Klan members, Russian skinheads, religious extremists . . . and Michael Savage, a 67-year-old American radio presenter with a dog called Teddy who can bark the tune of Jingle Bells.

Now, Savage (born Michael Alan Weiner) isn’t some lonely nutcase with a ham radio ranting about Hitler, but America’s third most popular chat show host with 8.5m weekly listeners. Think of an American Nicky Campbell — with a gun, a temper and some highly contentious views on immigration.

Take this gem from The Savage Nation, his nationally syndicated show, last summer: “The illness du jour is autism,” Savage fumed. “You know what autism is? In 99% of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. They don’t have a father around to tell them, ‘Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don’t sit there crying and screaming, you idiot’.”

Or this on Muslims: “I said, ‘So kill 100m of them, then there would be 900m of them.’ What is it gonna take for you people to wake up? Would you rather we disappear or we die? Or would you rather they disappear and they die? Because you’re gonna have to make that choice sooner rather than later.”

Savage has also said the victims of the 2004 tsunami deserved it for harbouring terrorists, that children’s minds are “being raped by the homosexual mafia” and that a caller who mocked his teeth “should only get Aids and die, you pig”.

These soundbites were enough for Smith to label him as “someone who has fallen into the category of fomenting hatred, of such extreme views and expressing them in such a way that it is actually likely to cause inter-community tension or even violence if that person were allowed into the country”.

And then . . . what? Did she imagine that would be that? If so, she didn’t know her man. In full spit-fleck mode, Savage took to the airwaves later that day to call the home secretary a “witch” and a “lunatic”, adding if she didn’t remove him from the list he would sue for defamation. Since he hasn’t committed any crime, he might have a case.

It’s great cabaret, but given that Savage had no plans to come to Britain, why did she single him out for the ban in the first place? Aside from any freedom of speech issues, wasn’t his inclusion rather arbitrary?

Certainly the American ranterati make our own dear Russell Brand, Chris Moyles and Jonathan Ross look like the Golden Girls.

Howard Stern, long hailed as America’s most outrageous DJ, was sacked for an item called Bestiality Dial-a-Date as far back as 1985 and finally left terrestrial radio in 2005 so he could broadcast uncensored on satellite radio. He likes to fill his studio with strippers and lesbians whom he encourages to get it on.

Then there are lesser-known names, including James Edwards and Bill Rolen, of the white nationalist radio show The Political Cesspool, whose mission statement includes reviving “the white birth rate”. Edwards has said slavery “is the greatest thing that ever happened” to black people. Or take Glenn Beck, who claims in his nationally broadcast show that the US government is running secret concentration camps.

One Sean Hannity — who, with 13.25m listeners, is even more popular than Savage — published a poll on his website recently that showed half his listeners advocated armed insurrection against the government. As for Rush Limbaugh — the ultra right-wing grandaddy of US radio — he instructed his followers (who call themselves “ditto heads” because they agree with everything he says) to riot at the Democratic conference last year.

On hearing Smith’s decree, the American shock jocks went predictably nuts. “There may not be words to describe just how outrageous and stupid this was,” John Ziegler, a conservative documentary film-maker who stands in for Savage when he’s on holiday, tells me from his Los Angeles home.

“This isn’t amusing, it’s downright scary. He’s not on some sort of watch-list, he’s actually banned from entering the country because of what he believes. He’s never broken any laws, never incited violence. His opinions are really not that far outside the mainstream.” He adds, chillingly: “They are pretty damn close to what our founding fathers in this country believed.”

Meanwhile, Hal Turner — a Holocaust-denying white supremacist with an internet radio show — made plans to fly to the UK in protest. This wasn’t as easy as it sounds as Turner was the subject of an unpublicised Home Office order banning him from the UK two years ago. He claims he arrived in the country last week in a way that “did not involve going through customs”. How? “Knowing the right way to present yourself gets you through, say as a flight crew,” he chuckles.

If true, this renders his ban a complete joke. By his own admission, Turner is far worse than Savage. In the past he has published the home addresses of liberal federal judges and encouraged parents to use “force and violence” against a gay-friendly school administrator for “his politically correct indoctrination into deadly, disease-ridden sodomite lifestyles”.

Yet Turner insists that in the early hours of Thursday morning he was broadcasting live from the heart of London — near Trafalgar Square. He tells me: “It’s a terrible reflection on the British people that their government doesn’t feel they can hear opinions without them going off on a violent rage. It denies me the chance to prove that I can behave when I’m in someone else’s country.”

It depends what you mean by “behave”, of course. His two-hour show features soundbites such as “so-called Holocaust”, “faggot” and “the word for Jew might as well be mongrel”.

Offensive as this is, it’s the kind of crude stuff that crops up in graffiti and on the blogosphere, without anyone bothering to make much fuss. So is Smith right to think that we need protection from the shock jocks?

Surprisingly, Nick Ferrari — whose mouthy breakfast show on LBC radio is loathed by many leftie liberals — believes she is. “I despise Savage’s views on autism,” he says, “and so on this occasion — which is very rare for me — I agree with Smith that it’s probably best he doesn’t come in.”

And free speech? “With the right of free speech comes the responsibility of what you say,” he replies.

“I’m incredibly lucky. I’m given the airwaves to broadcast for three hours a morning and it’s a privilege. But what I know is you can’t set out to offend people deliberately. What Savage says about autistic children is just bloody disgraceful and he does it purely for its shock value. The only way, I believe, to do that sort of radio is if you have an intellectual argument to back it up. I don’t think he has any intellectual capability.”

Savage’s intellect may not be easy to measure: his popularity in the States, however, is reflected in the audience figures. So what’s to like, exactly? “This is a big country,” says Rory O’Connor, who as the author of Shock Jocks: Hate Speech and Talk Radio has studied the phenomenon close up. “Clearly, the majority of Americans do not support this kind of hate-filled speech but there is a sizeable minority that does and the audience is not at all monolithic. A lot of people listen because they literally can’t believe what they’re hearing. It’s the aural equivalent of a car wreck on the highway.”

In other words, it’s just sick entertainment? “Exactly. They even refer to themselves as entertainers. Glenn Beck — a rising star here now — calls himself a rodeo clown. But there is so much contradiction.

“They say they’re only entertainers, but they call for first amendment protection. They say they’re only joking, but they put forward this toxic mix of information and opinion. It’s hard, frankly, to see where the lines are drawn.”

Savage has an unlikely biography. The son of Jewish immigrant parents, he grew up in the Bronx, where he worked as a high school teacher. Improbably, he also did a stint working for Timothy Leary, guarding the psychedelic drug guru’s LSD stash. He later moved to Hawaii and took a masters in anthropology and botany before a PhD at the University of California, Berkeley, where — amazingly, in retrospect — he befriended the beat poets Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. He even wrote homoerotic postcards to Ginsberg (he now claims these are forged) and carried a picture of the two of them swimming naked together.

He published gentle tomes on homeopathy, but by the early 1980s — driven by thirst for fame, his former friends believe — he became increasingly right-wing. He started railing against the gay bathhouse scene and claiming Asians were bringing disease to the United States, although he still broadcasts from what he now calls “San Fran Sicko”.

Despite his distaste for Savage, O’Connor feels Smith was wrong to ban him. “The antidote for hate speech is more speech,” he says, “though it’s a mistake to see the shock jocks just as outsiders being outrageous. They have power. Savage and the others were even able to defeat immigration reform in the United States two years ago.”

The policy — to have a partial amnesty for illegal immigrants already in the country — “was backed by the leaders of both parties in Congress and supported by the then president of the United States, who happened to be quite conservative. Yet, they got together, made it an issue, rebranded it as ‘shamnesty’ and were able to defeat the sitting president of the United States and both parties”.

Could this happen in the UK? Ferrari thinks not: “What’s different in this country is that for older generations the BBC is all they know. You have opinion drained out of you on the BBC. They want flat and anodyne.” A point Carol Thatcher — drummed out of the BBC for referring off air to a black tennis player as a “golliwog” — might endorse.

For all its faults, though, state-backed blandness makes for more comfortable listening than America’s sinister rants. I tune in to Turner in time to catch him wondering if the FBI’s disdain for the constitution means that America is due another Oklahoma-style bombing. Suddenly he tells his listeners: “The Indianapolis division of the FBI would be a perfect opportunity because they’re in a building that doesn’t have anti-truck-bomb barriers.”

You can hear the sly smile as he continues: “I have no plans to do any truck bombing but I recognise that using force is a viable option. I’m certainly not suggesting that any of you go out and do a truck bomb” — another smile — “but just think about whether or not our government is getting so out of control again they need to get knocked down a few pegs.”

I speak to him the next day and ask whether he believes in inciting violence. “Oh yes. It’s legal to do that in the States.” But is it right? He laughs cheerily: “I think it makes for great radio.”

Racism and violence: just another day on air

Rush Limbaugh on the Abu Ghraib photos: “I’m talking about people having a good time, these people, you ever heard of emotional release? You ever heard of the need to blow some steam off?”

And on the sexes: “Women still live longer than men because their lives are easier.”

Glenn Beck on Iran: “I say we nuke the bastards. In fact, it doesn’t have to be Iran, it can be everywhere, any place that disagrees with me.”

Laura Ingraham on Al Sharpton, the black Baptist minister, visiting the White House: “I hope they nailed down all the valuables.”

And on Americans: “True Americans are white, Christian, southern and Republican.”

Neal Boortz on Islam: “It is perfectly legitimate, perhaps even praiseworthy, to recognise Islam as a religion of vicious, violent, bloodthirsty cretins.”

Hal Turner on racism: “A day of violence against blacks would be a really nice thing . . . complete with lynchings, church burnings, drive-by shootings and bombings to put these subhuman animals back in their place.”

After seeing what he's into, I don't mind him being barred from entering any country. Seems like Ms Smith might have bitten off more than she can chew though, some of these other twats make Savage sound like a liberal.

He should do more acid, he obviously didn't do enough first time round Smile

it did get a little mention on the jon stewart show

Yikes - well I stand corrected. Thanks for the link, Luke.

Still, my point of mentioning Jon Stewart is that no one calls 'em out the way Stewart & Co do; their comedy conveys the absolute absurdity that this Savage guy is getting any recognition whatsoever, b/c Savage is irrelevant to, I would even venture to guess, the majority of Americans. The dude is not worth the effort of even typing his name again. Seriously. crazed

I'd never heard of him until I read the list, but then again, the radio in my car hasn't worked since 1998.

if you think savage is bad you ain't heard nothing yet! i've just been listening to hal turner, he's the guy mentioned in the times article who was banned from here a few years back but apparently came in last week to do a radio show.

this is a little bit from his radio show ...

'the only option we have left is to use force, violence, to start killing these sons of bitches and the people who side with them. it is time to get rid of the cultural, political and social filth that is wrecking this country ... i harold charles turner, an american citizen, advocate killing the people who are infesting and infecting my country with the diseases of socialism and communism. kill them all and let god sort it out.'

heres an article from his blog;

Help Wanted: Firing Squads, Gallows builders, Hangmen, Guillotine Operators . . . .

As we fast approach the coming violent revolution here in the United States, - and be assured it is coming - its become quite apparent that such an effort will require help in many fields. The purging of political, cultural and social filth is one of the tasks that the revolution will engage in and such task will require enormous amounts of manpower.

What you're about to read may seem harsh at first, but it truly is necessary.

With so much political, cultural and social filth infesting our once great land, the clean up is going to involve a lot of wet work. Hey, you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs, so making a mess to clean up our mess is something we need to prepare for.

I envision the clean up being accomplished with all-night firing squads, hangings and perhaps even use of guillotines.

Take a look at the complete cluster fuck of a mess we suffer at the federal level. At least half the House of Representatives has to go. Better than half of the Senate has to go. At least three and probably four Supreme Court Justices and boatloads of their brethren in the Circuit Courts of Appeal and District courts too. Think about that for just a moment. . . . . the tally is already up near a thousand!

But what a joy it would be. Since many of the elected officials at the local, county state and federal level are such outright traitors to freedom, degenerate perverts, liars, cheats and thieves, they are completely beyond redemption or re-education. For myself, I can't see any reason at all to pay to feed and house them in jail when the new American Sovereignty arises, so we need to have methods in place to properly deal with these vermin from the outset.

I think all-night firing squads, public hangings and even beheading via Guillotine are in order.

Imagine the thrill of seeing degenerate perverts like Barney Frank of Massachusetts swing from a rope. Consider how many will look-on with glee as the hideously ugly, plastic-faced, phony, Nancy Pelosi, gets an instant makeover from the neck up. CHOP! THAT would be a real public service!

This doesn't even begin to take into account the perverts in the National Endowment for the Arts, for atrocities like the Maplethorpe exhibit. Consider too, the dingbats in the National Institutes of Health who are paying almost $2 million of our tax dollars this year for doctors to study gay sex habits in bars in Argentina and another study and millions more of our tax dollars to teach Chinese prostitutes about the dangers of drinking too much alcohol on the job. Yes, these are real examples!

How about the Department of Energy? They were formed during the Carter Administration to develop new sources of energy to lessen US dependence on foreign oil. Their budget is about $24 Billion a year. All that money, over all that time and what do we have to show for it? Are we less dependent upon foreign oil today than we were in the mid 1970's? No. So what has all that money and all that time gotten our nation? Zip. Nada. Nothing. The entire agency deserves to be hung by their necks until they are dead.

How about the Department of Education? Now there's a contradiction in terms if ever I heard one! In all the years they've been in existence, have American school kids gotten better educated than ones from 30 years ago? No. In fact, thanks to the the Dept. of Education, most of our children are coming out of school totally unprepared for real life. The damage done to the future of this nation by the Dept. of Education is a crime against humanity. All the employees in that agency deserve to be shot by firing squads for the pathetic failures that they are. ALL of them!

Agency after agency at the federal level are nothing more than complete, dismal failures and they deserve what they have coming.

Thankfully, our friends in FEMA have already purchased one million plastic coffins, half of which are already neatly staked in a field in Georgia. Thanks, guys! Hope a lot of you will feel snug in them.

Next, let's talk about the cultural and social filth. Who is it that has been peddling this filth over the airwaves and in newspapers, magazines and the like? Yes, you-know who! Which, incidentally, is why Hitler sent 6 million of them rightly to their deaths for the culture wrecking they perpetrated on Germany! I know, I know, you've all heard that Hitler was some sort of monster who targeted certain groups simply because who they were. Not true. He saw who was peddling the filth. He saw the books like "Heather has two mommies" and "Daddy's Roomate" and saw how such similar things were wrecking his country. Why do you think they burned such books? Forbidden knowldege? No, Cultural filth! Hitler told told them to stop pushing this crap on German society but, being the arrogant Christ killers that they were, they refused. So. . . . he killed them. Problem solved. . . . at least for Germany. The rest of us, not so fortunate. The progeny of those same folks who were wrecking Germany back then are here today wrecking our nation. The solution? Get em all this time!

Let's move on to the greedy bankers, Wall Street types and the other "masters-of-the-universe" who've been wrecking the economy, robbing trillions from our retirement funds and shipping US jobs overseas to pad their own pockets? I say, line em up and gun them down. They have no loyalty to this nation. Their only loyalty is to their own pockets. Let's see how much their money protects them we WE come calling? BANG. OOOOPS, turns out money ain't bullet proof.

I could go on and on and on, but you get the idea. Folks, America is in dire trouble. Our nation is being systematically destroyed. KILLED! It is our right to use lethal force in self defense.

A fight is coming to this country. A real, blood and guts, kill or be killed fight. It is going to be quite ugly because it HAS to be. There's no avoiding it. Elections won't work because the system has been completely, totally corrupted. In fact, right now, as you read this, groups are studying where to put tens of thousands of illegal aliens into "swing" districts so when the Census is taken in 2010, they redraw districts to make certain they can steal the next 10 years of elections!

Not only are the illegal aliens stealing your country, they're helping steal your birthright vote too! To them, this is all just some sort of game to be rigged, stolen or otherwise won by any means necessary.

Lest you think that using force to stop this is too harsh, let me remind you that the people who are wrecking this nation are the very same people who have no problem whatsoever killing innocent babies inside their mothers through convenience abortions! Think they'll care one wit about killing you too? Think again!

Force is the only viable option left to save America.

The government knows this and they just want to keep the status quo without having the nation erupt in violence. They're doing everything they can to delay the inevitable long enough while they try to quietly disarm us so we cannot fight. It won't work.

So, my dear readers, prepare yourselves. Start thinking about what role YOU want to play as we purge the filth from this land forever.

Oh, and you folks in government. . . . . take this a real life wake-up call. There are people like me all over this nation and we have had enough of you. We're starting to openly discuss killing you and we're not one bit afraid of what you think about it. You see, we grossly outnumber you. We have you completely surrounded. We have more guns than you and more ammunition than you. Best of all, we're motivated! You have screwed us around for so long, and so badly that guys like me are perfectly comfortable with idea of killing you.

Straighten up and fly right before we decide to straighten you out our way. July 4, 2009 would be a great day to begin this endeavor; elected politicians will be out in the open, marching in Fourth of July parades, giving speeches and attending fireworks displays. What a great opportunity for certain BANGS and BOOMS of the day to carry a completely different connotation!

Hate Radio: Infesting the Airwaves

A short documentary investigating white supremacist radio host Hal Turner, who formerly broadcast on shortwave radio station WBCQ, and now airs his show on the Internet. This documentary asks questions about the limits of free speech, as we speak to critics of Turner (Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting, One People's Project); his supporters (the Ku Klux Klan); the free speech radio station that aired his show; and to Hal Turner himself.

That line near the end where the black guy says 'we need free speech like this so we know who the bad guys are' is the biggest pile of cop-out bollocks. Do you need to look under a rock to know there's insects there?

Unfettered free speech is unworkable, impractical, stupid and anti-democratic (in that it enables those who attack the legal right of others to live in peace).

I'm listening to the Hal Turner show now - dated 25th May. He's not actually as bad as I thought he might be, at least on this show. His tone is fairly measured really and far more listenable than someone like Alex Jones for example. He's given out the home address of a Sheriff somewhere and said that if the cops burst into his house he'd have no problem 'shooting to kill'. The usual kind of stuff really.

He's also talking about how his server was hacked into by the FBI, resulting in them leaving tracking scripts hidden.

Take me off the blacklist, shock jock tells Brown

American radio talk show host Michael Savage refuses to drop his libel claim against Jacqui Smith, who he says defamed him when she said he was on a list of people banned from Britain

When Jacqui Smith stepped down as Home Secretary last week she may have expected that the most toxic job in the Cabinet was behind her. But one man has not forgotten her.

Yesterday, the controversial American talkshow host Michael Savage announced he was continuing his personal £100,000 libel case against the former Home Secretary after she placed him on a list of people banned from entering Britain and condemned him on television.

In a letter addressed to Gordon Brown and passed to The Independent, Savage says he is "likely to recover a very substantial award in damages" and demands that the Government "remove forthwith my name from the excluded list of individuals". He has instructed the City law firm Olswang and has urged his eight million listeners to boycott British goods.

For Savage, beloved by American right-wingers for his politically charged rants which have included describing a child with autism as "a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out", this latest salvo against his persona non grata status is part of a media blitz to clear his name in Britain, a place that had barely heard of him until he was unceremoniously banned from entering it. He has hired the former News of the World editor Phil Hall, who specialises in "reputation management" for celebrities.

The spat between Savage and Ms Smith began in May when the Home Office "named and shamed" 16 people who had been banned from entering Britain in the previous six months. Savage, who had not even applied to come to Britain, was placed alongside a string of Islamist preachers, white supremacists, a convicted Arab terrorist and two anti-gay evangelicals.

Speaking on morning television, Ms Smith described Savage as "someone who has fallen into the category of fomenting hatred, of such extreme views and expressing them in such a way that it is actually likely to cause inter-community tension or even violence if that person were allowed into the country."

The San Francisco radio host believes those words were defamatory. He told The Independent: "I have to get my name cleared. She's made me into some sort of enemy of the state, for God's sake. On the same list I was on were a convicted terrorist and two Russian skinhead murderers.

"There is a big difference between acts of violence and words and I have never prompted anyone to commit any sort of act of violence. I would not have been able to continue my career as a radio host if I had."

For the Government, Savage's determination to pursue a libel claim against Ms Smith is a source of embarrassment which could derail the whole point of having a list of banned individuals. It is meant to keep hate preachers out of Britain but libertarians say it is a form of pre-emptive thought policing.

Hal Turner, Talk Radio Host, Facing Charges For Inciting Violence Against Officials

Things don't appear to be going to well for New Jersey internet radio host and white supremacy-enthusiast Hal Turner. The onetime candidate for Congress and inveterate threatener of public officials has run afoul of the law, and will face charges in Connecticut. The Hartford Courant has the news:

Turner, who has been identified as a white supremacist and anti-Semite by several anti-racism groups, hosts an Internet radio program with an associated blog. On Tuesday, the blog included a post that promised to release the home addresses of state Rep. Michael Lawlor, state Sen. Andrew McDonald and Thomas Jones of the State Ethics Office.

"Mr. Turner's comments are above and beyond the threshold of free speech," Capitol Police Chief Michael J. Fallon said in an e-mail announcing the warrant. "He is inciting others through his website to commit acts of violence and has created fear and alarm. He should be held accountable for his conduct."

The remarks on the blog were a reaction to the recent controversy over a bill that would have changed the way the Roman Catholic Church is governed, taking power away from church officials and turning it over to lay members. It was pulled in mid-March following an outcry from Catholics across the state and questions about its constitutionality.

The comments in question included, "It is our intent to foment direct action against these individuals personally. These beastly government officials should be made an example of as a warning to others in government: Obey the Constitution or die," and "If any state attorney, police department or court thinks they're going to get uppity with us about this, I suspect we have enough bullets to put them down, too."

These sorts of threats of impending violence are nothing new to Turner.

In December of 2006, Turner called for political assassinations:

"We may have to ASSASSINATE some of the people you elect on Nov. 7! This could be your LAST ELECTION CHANCE, to save this Republic... Sorry to have to be so blunt, but the country is in mortal danger from our present government and our liberty is already near dead because of this government. If you are too stupid to turn things around with your vote, there are people out here like me who are willing to turn things around with guns, force and violence. We hope our method does not become necessary."

In March of 2008, when Sean Hannity was confronted with having been previously associated with Turner, Hannity's forceful denials seemed to anger a betrayed Turner:

"I was quite disappointed when Sean Hannity at first tried to say he didn't know me and then went on to say that I ran some senate campaign in New Jersey. In fact, Sean Hannity does know me and we were quite friendly a number of years ago."

Turner went on to threaten: "Another big difference is that I am perfectly willing to use force and violence against my enemies while Sean Hannity and others are not. Those using me as a prop to attack Sean Hannity would do well to remember this fact."

A month later, Turner was inciting violence against Paul B. Ash, the Lexington, Massachusetts superintendent of schools:

"I advocate parents using FORCE AND VIOLENCE against Superintendent Paul B. Ash as a method of defending the health and safety of school children presently being endangered through his politically-correct indoctrination into deadly, disease-ridden sodomite lifestyles."

The Courant reports that Turner will be in a New Jersey court today for extradition proceedings.

haha, that's funny that I mentioned his giving out of officials' addresses in passing - and now it's the reason he's been nabbed.

I think it might have been the line about how 'whatever you might do with this information is up to you' might have been a fair enough reason for an investigation.

Lawyer: FBI Trained Hal Turner As An "Agent Provocateur"

Internet blogger Harold "Hal" Turner's attorney said today that Turner's background as an FBI informant will be a key part of his defense to charges that he incited violence against two state legislators and a state ethics official.

Superior Court Judge David P. Gold on Tuesday authorized Michael A. Orozco, a New Jersey attorney, to represent Turner. Turner did not appear again in court Tuesday because he remains in federal custody without bail in Chicago, where he is accused of threatening three federal judges.

In asking Gold to allow Orozco to represent Turner, Turner's Connecticut lawyer, Matthew R. Potter, said Orozco has a long-term legal relationship with Turner, plans to bring a complicated First Amendment defense and is familiar with Turner's background as an FBI informant.

That role as an informant for the FBI is a key part of the defense, Orozco said outside court.

Orozco said Turner was trained by the FBI as "an agent provocateur."

"Mr. Turner was trained by the FBI," Orozco said. "He was told where the line was — what he could say."

In his comments on his blog that brought the state and federal charges, Turner did not cross that line, Orozco said.

Orozco said Turner worked for the FBI from roughly 2002 to 2007.

"His job was basically to publish information which would cause other parties to act in a manner that would cause their arrest," Orozco said.

The comments for which he is charged came after he left the service of the FBI, Orozco said.

Turner stopped working for the FBI on his own, Orozco said. He declined to say who the targets of his comments were.

"If you compare anything he said when he was operating, there's no difference" to what he posted on his blog that led to the criminal charges, Orozco said.

He is scheduled to go to trial on the federal charges on Oct. 5. His next court date in Hartford is set for October 19.
