Pensioner on mobility scooter on dual-carriageway

These shocking pictures show a pensioner on his mobility scooter driving along a busy dual-carriageway at 8mph. Puzzled drivers called police after noticing the elderly man, out shopping, travelling along the A27 near Shoreham, West Sussex.
Paving contractor James Dunne stepped in to help after spotting 90-year-old Stanley Murphy riding down the slow lane yesterday lunchtime. Mr Dunne, 45, of Arundel Road, Worthing said: "As I came off the roundabout and up on to the slip road I could see a mobility scooter. I overtook, went in front and tried flashing the lights on my lorry. I then pulled over to the side, jumped out and waved him down. He wasn't going to stop at first, so I had to say 'Stop'. He was a little bit shell-shocked and didn't know where he was. He said he had gone out to buy a newspaper. Somehow he must have got on to the roundabout and taken the wrong road."
Mr Dunne called police who arrived and took the pensioner home to Mill Lane, Shoreham, by car, while he returned the mobility scooter to Mr Murphy on the back of his lorry. PC Jim Lockwood of Sussex Police said: "Obviously I would like to thank the member of the public that helped deliver the gentleman's motorised scooter to his home address and prevented the incident worsening by using the flashing lights on his vehicle."
A Sussex Police spokesman said: "Officers were called at around 12.30pm to the A27 at Shoreham to reports relating to an elderly gentleman in a motorised buggy driving up the westbound carriageway in lane one. Officers attended and assisted him off the highway and back home."

He's probably still muttering to himself about the nosey buggers who messed up his afternoon! |
