I remember the film well - though they rarely show it these days because, I guess, the man character's dog was called Nigger... 'Here boy, here nigger!'. Lovely.

Here's an ad for Carling lager from the 80s based on the film.

Stephen Fry is writing a screenplay for a new film by Peter Jackson.

The nigger thing is going to be a problem because they are damned if they leave it in and damned if they take it out. It's not just the name of the dog, the dog was run over and killed on the day of the mission so they made it the codeword for the dam being breached.

It's not really on to have the climax of a film being the hero shouting 'NIGGER NIGGER...' :)

Peter Jackson is quoted as saying the first question he keeps being asked when he visits Britain is 'What are you going to do about the dog?'
