Holy cow - McCain just realised that all this anti-Obama stuff was getting seriously out of hand and escalting in a way that was going to leave blood on his hands if he didn't act.

Much as I don't like to admit it, I'm pretty sure it's not about him not wanting to have blood on his hands, but about at least trying to retain some kind of decorum.
