I'd recommend you watch the 'McLibel - Two People Who Wouldn't Say Sorry' documentary that's in the streaming TV section for a close examination of how they work. |
I agree with you on how the companies operate Face but I know there are also plenty of other people out there who are heavy regardless of this fact. There are people who it's not the fast food that gets them. There are people who will just buy junk in the stores. Donuts, pigs feet, chips/crisps, fatty meats, the lot. Not one drive thru in site.
However, the fast food doesn't help. |
Yeah, but all those companies are doing the same thing as McDonald's in that sense. Pig's feet though? Surely people don't eat them? I thought they were for making stock from! |

IMO, that is a load of crap and I know from whence I speak. I am one of those "fatties" that would not be served and my weight loss is well documented in the Health threads (BTW - update - 48.2 lbs and 1.8 lbs away from my new tattoo!). In no way shape or form do I blame the fast food industry for my weight issues. They do not lasso me from the street and force me to order, or better stated, over order in their fine establisment. I make my food choices and for the better part of 45 years, I have been making the wrong ones. Not McDonalds, not Wendys, not Burger King, but Spursfan...plain and simple. Would I still be fat if there were no fast food? Absolutely. It is in my genes (and hanging over my jeans!! ). So in an effort to end this rant, suffice it to say that I think that this bill is just ridiculous and it brings to light the wrong message. All IMO, of course.... |
You make some excellent points Spurs and I agree with you 100%. Part of my issues with weight is my height. It's difficult to keep weight of at my height and of course, I love food. I'm not a fan of fast food either. I can't think of the last time I had meal from McDonald's or the like. For me it's been lack of exercise (got to the gym twice this week though woot) and bad food choices myself. I'm working on changing that as well.
The government can't make people do that by not allowing them to be served. Being fat, like we both said, isn't from the fast food chains. Now what they can do instead is offer incentives, special activities for the whole city, etc. I know other cities have done that as well in the past. Making city wide challenges, making sure people know good and bad eating etc. So many people would lose weight if they just knew how.
I am so proud of you btw. You are doing awesome. In all honesty you have been an inspiration to me and I appreciate it |
Aw shucks, Sky, thanks. It feels good to have the weight off and I just want everyone else to feel it.
Now, don't get me wrong, I love fast food, it's just that I like looking for smaller sizes better! My weight was also getting to a danger point. I am now and always have been healthy other than my weight, but I didn't want it to get higher and have that not be true anymore. I think it should all be out there and we as adults have to know when to choose it and when not to and be strong enough to make the tough calls...to french fry or not to french fry..that is the question!! That is not a decision that the government should have time to worry about, whether or not I go thru the drive thru. They really have better things to do with their time (and I don't want to get into a big discussion regarding the good/bad of the goverment of my country -- as stated, it's not perfect, but none are). |

| Since I have moved to America I have noticed one thing - when I was young I was always told to finish of my plate. Here however, meal sizes are ridiculous - I once managed to eat one dish at the restaurant - took the remaining home with me in a doggy bag and had it for lunch and dinner the following day!!!! I think if portion sizes were to be reduced that would be rather useful as I think a lot of people follow the 'finish your plate off' regime .. just my tow cents |

I agree with that as well Lost. My husband noticed the same thing as well when he moved here and in all honesty I have noticed a growth in meal size as well.
I usually have to take food home and can have it for lunch and sometimes dinner as well the next day.
Portion is a big concern. You can have "bad" foods in small amounts and it won't be as bad for you.
I really love ice cream but instead of having a huge bowl I take a smaller bowl that more than halves the serving and I can still enjoy it.
The simple fact is energy has to equal energy out. So if you are consuming more calories then you are burning you're going to gain weight. And only you can make that happen. |

| Portion sizes here are ridculous, I agree. It's that whole value for money thing...But again, it is the consumer that has to step in and say "right, I am not going to eat all of that" and act accordingly. I usually order a to go box with my meal and half it before I start. That way there is no way for my eyes to be hungrier than I am. |

I catch myself finishing the plate off sometimes even though I am not hungry any more - I think there was a notion to ban the supersize at some point (not quite sure if that ever happened?) - and last night I went to an All-you-can-eat buffet and gorged once again I think it might not be all that bad if the culinary industry was somewhat regulated?! |

The actually did get rid of the Super Sized meals for a while, the restaurants did it on their own after the documentary "Super Size Me" however, the consumers got upset about it and they brought it back. Also to protect themselves from further lawsuits you will notice the fast food places offer "healthy" alternatives. Like salads (once you put the dressing on it isn't as healthy), low fat milk, fruits, etc. So you can eat healthier at those places if you want to. |
