I am a bit of an amateur "social scientist" ... I have a control group of 4. same basic genetic makeup, same socio-economic status, I pretty much treat them all the same - same amount of love, discipline, basic needs met ... they have known no trauma or drama other than birth and they will still argue, fight, get jealous, lash out, proclaim their rights have been violated, shove and push to get what they want, believe they are being slighted ...
While I agree that inequality needs to be rectified, war is the last (and worst) option and in general the world is not fair - I am a realist. You will never end all conflicts.
For what it's worth - I live in a safe area and can leave my front door unlocked and wide open confident that nothing will happen. (I lock my door to keep the toddlers in!) It is possible in a capitalist society.
Now that I think about it ... I have lived in America (an not just white bread suburbia) for almost 40 years and have never seen a handgun or taser and have not been a victim nor witness of a violent crime. Am I living in a fantasy world? Am I delusional? hmmmm. |

I probably should've hunted for that thread and added to it. Sorry for the clutter...
I never suggested that police should be unarmed -- but I think that equipping them with a so-called non-lethal weapon actually encourages its use, leading to more deaths than if they had firearms.
A firearm is a very real and deadly weapon, so they will be more discerning on when to use it. Whereas a tazer comes with a false sense of safety. |

Same here, Marcella (well, substitute Canada for America, but you get my point). I've never seen these things... sure they exist, but I can say that they're not part of something I see every day.
I'm not sure what the answers are to this problem, I'm truly not. But I don't know how you get rid of it. And for what it's worth, I firmly believe and support police being armed. There is no perfect system, but I believe they need this to keep themselves safe while doing their job. There might be some nutters in there, but no more than in any other occupation or group. |

excellent point. Attitude is everything. People have a fear and respect of firearms that they do not have towards tasers.
I guess we can let the clutter slide. No tasering bro! We are a civilized board ... for the most part. |

hmmmm .... we must NEVER meet. I am afraid it would be an emotional holocaust that would destroy ourselves and all in a 100 mile radius. Love hate relationships always end in disaster.
and I use holocaust in the original definition form from the
Greek, "the destruction of life by fire" a la Philadelphia Story ... |

I haven't capped the news coverage to my computer yet, but plan to try this w/end. I'll post it somewhere when it's ready if anyone's interested. |

| nice one mandy - although i think you got the description a bit wrong on spidered "Taser video shows Canadian police shocked Polish immigrant within 25 seconds of his arrival. He died from the multiple taser shocks" shouldn't it be within 25 seconds of the police arriving? the guy had been there a while |
