Teacher's aide staples kid

Post by Skylace »

A fourth-grade teacher's aide resigned after he was accused of trying to staple a piece of paper to a student's forehead.

Plymouth, Indiana school district Superintendent John Hill would not identify the aide or the class at Jefferson Elementary School.

"We're just sorry that it happened," Hill said Wednesday night. "We don't expect our people to behave in that manner. That person is no longer employed by the school corporation."

Indiana Channel 6 TV station reports that Principal Bob Remenih said he could not comment on a student or personnel matter. But Natalie Wilson, the fourth-grader's mother, told the South Bend Tribune that the principal called her shortly before her daughter got on the school bus Monday, more than three hours after the incident occurred.

"I should have been told immediately," Wilson told the newspaper.

Wilson said her daughter told her she had picked up a Post-It note from the floor and stuck it to her forehead. The aide told her to remove the paper from her forehead or he would staple it there permanently. When the student failed to remove the paper, the aide approached her with a stapler and pushed it against her forehead, Wilson said.

There were "two holes in her head," the mother said. "It actually punctured her skin. This was not an accident"

:wow: When I heard this story on the news this morning I actually gasped. This person should not be able to work with children ever again. This wasn't even funny. If you can't handle yourself with an 7/8 year old and realize the boundaries there you should not be even around them. I would also think if he has kids that CYFD might want to check into the home. If he's willing to do that in a public setting and at work. I would hate to think of what happens in private!

I also am shocked that the administration took so long to report the incident. We always reported any injury right away and I would think in this case you would make sure that three hours didn't pass.

That poor kid

thats way out of order, i'd be so angry if that was my kid. the police should surely be involved? doesn't seem quite right that they can just get away with resigning

I agree luke. I would want to make it as difficult as possible for this person to get a job again and I would press charges for that reason alone. Of course, I can't imagine as a 4th grader that I wouldn't be a little scared after this to come to school. So I think if the kid incurs any therapy he should have to pay for it.

Exactly. This person should be charged with assault and never be allowed to work with children ever again. Plain and simple.

Not defending the "stapler" but I am sure there is more to this story. I have a 4th grader. They can be rats. I wonder what was going on in the class that it got to this point? Where was the teacher?

Yeah, I have wanted to staple things to her head. That age group can certainly push you. I guess I wouldn't actually staple though...

I worked with everything from K-6 and let me tell you I know they can be trying. There are times I wanted to staple things to them and more, but NEVER would I have done that. And I have had stuff thrown at me, kicked at and even bit.

As for the where was the teacher, I am not sure about Indiana but teacher's aides in NM were able to be left for short periods of time. Not the whole day. It's like when they get left with a librarian or cafeteria monitor.
