The Sunday Times article (Galloway suspended)
The difference is, of course, that George would never commission such a game to be made. Even if he temporarily lost his judgement and did do such a thing (maybe a hoopla-based game where you have to fling nooses around Blair's head as many times as you can in 60 seconds? haha!) then he should be free to do that, tasteless or not.Mandy wrote:No, I am not suggesting that. I was highlighting possible hypocrisy as to what the Sun would have said if GG created a game about "shooting" another MP. They would call him a terrorist sympathiser (or worse, encouraging terrorism).
For instance, if there was a change in the law which criminalised the sicker of the games on newgrounds.com, I'd be strongly on the side of the rights of free expression and artistic license - not because I think games like "Spear Britney" are any good (infact, I think they're crap and tediously un-funny) but because in my opinion it would be a notable steepening of the slippery slope that over-powerful "moral" lobbyists want to place us on.
As GG often says himself, there's a marked difference between free-speech and shouting "fire!" in a crowded theatre house, but the content of most of these Flash games are overwhelmingly just simplistic attempts at subversive humour - they're not convincing calls-to-arms for people to take to the streets, cans of kitty-kat in one hand and a flaming torch in the other.
I take your point, however, that you weren't suggesting they should be illegal.

Personally, I put an egg in a small cardboard box (such as a Terry's Orange box), and place it for 2 minutes in a microwave. The egg explodes, and when you open the box you have a ready made egg omelet.

SOLIDARITY
SCOTLAND'S SOCIALIST MOVEMENT
In response to yesterday's decision by the Westminster Parliament's Standards and Privileges Committee to suspend Respect MP, George Galloway, Solidarity accuses the nation's political elite of conducting a sustained witchhunt against a man whose only crime is that he has dedicated his political career to speaking truth to power, and has been a thorn in the side of a government which has inflicted untold suffering and violence on the people of Iraq and Afghanistan in support of US aims to colonise the region.
Solidarity Co-Convenor, Tommy Sheridan, said: "Yesterday's decision to suspend George Galloway from Parliament for 18 days comes soon after we witnessed the digesting standing ovation given to Tony Blair by those very same individuals. It really does illustrate the fact that we're now living in an upside world, a world in which people like George, who've stood up against a brutal and bloody war that was unleashed on a tissue of lies, are victimised, while people like Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, who're responsible for this carnage, are lionised."
This latest attempt to undermine the credibility of the Respect MP for Bethnal Green and Bow comes on the back of previous attempts to do so lodged in both the UK and the US. Each of those attempts have been defeated. George Galloway's stance and tireless work on behalf of the people of the Middle East has earned him accolades and deep respect in every corner of the world. He is the 'people's' Middle East peace envoy and we pledge to support him against those who are complicit in the ongoing carnage taking place in Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine, and who have blood on their hands.
Ends.
