Woman bailed over 'Madeleine con'

A woman has been arrested after visiting several homes in Staffordshire claiming to be raising funds for the family of missing Madeleine McCann.

The woman, from Chadsmoor in Cannock, had received money from homes in the Johnson Road area of the town, a police spokesman said.

Insp Matt Derrick said they were unaware of any legitimate collections in the locality.

The 33-year-old woman, who has not been named, has been bailed until 30 June.

Insp Derrick urged householders to be cautious over unexpected callers at the door and to call police if they were suspicious.

Madeleine fund

Four-year-old Madeleine was abducted from the family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, while her parents were at a nearby restaurant.

Her parents, Kate and Gerry, are to appear on BBC Crimewatch on Tuesday to appeal for her safe return.

The funds raised by the public for the McCanns will be used to help find Madeleine, support her family and bring her abductors to justice, the fund's website says.

Any surplus funds will be used to help families and missing children in the United Kingdom, Portugal and elsewhere in similar circumstances.

Details of how to donate to Madeleine's Fund - at banks, by post or via the internet - can be found at www.findmadeleine.com.

You're right Mandy... con artists do jump at any tragedy. I'm always reluctant when I here things like this. Here, when people are raising funds for something such as this, they open an account at a bank with several branch locations and then anyone who wants to donate can go to their branch to do so. That way all the money goes where it should.
