'EastEnders' Gus suspended over assault caution

Wednesday, March 28 2007
By Kris Green, Soaps Editor

EastEnders executive producer Diederick Santer today suspended actor Mohammed George after he was cautioned by the police yesterday.

In December, the 24-year-old actor – who plays market sweeper Gus Smith – was arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm after allegedly hitting lover Emma Archibald and leaving her lying on the pavement outside a Camden restaurant where they had been eating.

Yesterday, he was cautioned for common assault following an admission of the offence and an apology to Emma, daughter of former Tottenham and Barcelona footballer Steve Archibald.

An official BBC statement today read: "Diederick Santer has taken the decision to suspend Mohammed George with immediate effect for a period of two months.

"In addition Mohammed George would like to apologise to the BBC and its viewers for his actions that have brought EastEnders into disrepute."

It is unclear as to whether the actor is still in a relationship with Emma.

George is the second soap actor this week to be suspended. This latest action comes within only 24 hours of the suspension of Bruce Jones by Coronation Street bosses following a Sunday newspaper report.

You wouldn't know from his kind-harted acting. If it's true, he should be in jail IMHO!

What's wrong with this picture? He got a harsher sentence from his employer than he did from the courts! I guess it's okay to assault people.

You're right Pirty.

And he's not got a huge storyline anyway, so I don't think he'll really be missed that much.

I wonder if there are any other actors who have a "caution" which results in suspension from their job? Or to take it even more broadly, an indivdual who receives the same punishment? In the U.S., all he'd have to do would be to seek "rehabilition" and counseling to seek retribution. The "Grey's Anatomy" actor, Isiah Washington, was not fired from his job when he made disparaging remarks against another cast member -- he just checked himself into rehab.

Seems as the the EE PR people didn't have need for Mr George, and are taking this opportunity to give him the sack.

Yea to the BBC! Den got the sack for spanking this monkey on a webcam, Shawn was suspended for racy texts so I believe they are being fair to Gus by suspending him too, especially since at this point he is just an extra with no real storyline. Maybe he's spent so much time playing a street sweeper that that's what he now wants to do for a job. Bye Bye Bully.
