Cockfighting in NM

Post by Skylace »

A bill to outlaw cockfighting in New Mexico has cleared its final legislative hurdle and is now headed to Governor Bill Richardson, who has indicated he’ll sign it.

Currently, Louisiana and New Mexico are the only states in the nation that don’t prohibit cockfighting.

The measure won final approval Friday when the Senate voted 27-5 to accept a technical amendment made by the House.

The bill making it illegal to fight roosters passed the state House Thursday on a vote of 49-20.

Supporters of the ban have said cockfighting has made New Mexico a laughingstock. Opponents portray cockfighting as a traditional rural activity in the state.

The passage and probable signing of the bill by the governor represents a long sought victory for Democratic Senator Mary Jane Garcia of Dona Ana who has pursued a cockfighting ban for 17 years.

I so hope this goes through. The only defense I have heard from people who participate in this is that it is part of the Mexican culture and heritage. Much like the practice of fox hunting did, it needs to be banned. I don't care if it's a part of their heritage. I told one of my co-workers that used that as a defense that there is much more to the culture and heritage or Mexico then cockfighting and that somethings just need to go.

I'd also include bull fighting in that ban. Anything where they use animals in a way that harms them for human entertainment is just dreadful and cruel. The only joy I've got from seeing bull fighting is when the person gets one of the horns embedded in them from teasing and trying to throw those spears or whatever they are into them.

Animals weren't put on earth to serve this purpose and anyone who finds this part of their culture isn't saying much for themselves. It's a cruel and inhumane thing to do and I'd be ashamed to say such a ridiculous statement.

That's such a good point Irish. Spot on  I hate bull fighting as well. And I refuse to go to the circus where animals are used.

The only circus I'd ever go to is Cirque du Soleil. I find it revolting to use animals in any form of entertainment as it's not natural and they're usually taught using cruel methods.

That's the only circus I have been to in years myself. Every year they give out free tickets to the schools for the circus in town. It makes me sick

If they're using animals, and I imagine they are, there should be a protest. It's so damn wrong.

This pisses me off. It is a FELONY to attempt to take the life of a fucking ROOSTER, but attempt to take the live of a HUMAN with a DEADLY WEAPON and it is a misdemeanor. There is something SERIOUSLY wrong here. /rant

That's a very fair point and those laws need to be changed too.
