Blair in Black Sabbath Irony

TONY Blair yesterday revealed he is a huge fan of Ozzy Osbourne’s old band Black Sabbath.

The PM requested one of the heavy metal group’s hits during a radio interview, saying: “It reminds me of my schooldays.”

The 1970 song, called Black Sabbath led many to believe Ozzy and pals were devil worshippers.

Mr Blair, famously pictured with demon eyes in a 1997 Tory election poster, also asked for Snow Patrol’s You’re All I Have. He told Scotland’s Real Radio that son Euan, 23, keeps him in touch with modern music, adding: “He chooses things he thinks I’ll be able to listen to.”

The PM was once lead singer of student band Ugly Rumours. He chose D:Ream anthem Things Can Only Get Better for his 1997 campaign — then invited Oasis and Blur to No10. In 2003, he said he liked The Darkness.

I wonder what he would make of the Black Sabbath song, "War Pigs", which goes like this:

Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerers of deaths construction
In the fields the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
Death and hatred to mankind
Poisoning their brainwashed minds, oh lord yeah!

Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor

Time will tell on their power minds
Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait till their judgement day comes, yeah!

Now in darkness, world stops turning
As the war machine keeps burning
No more war pigs of the power
Hand of God has sturck the hour
Day of judgement, God is calling
On their knees, the war pigs crawling
Begging mercy for their sins
Satan, laughing, spreads his wings

I know that song well. I'm sure shameless Tony is quite capable of "picking and choosing" (to borrow a phrase) his Sabbath tunes, though. One starts to wonder if he would even recognize the relevance of these lyrics to present day events.

Kate, did you hear the end of the show today? I just heard it, and he wrapped it up with your "Thanks Mr. President" brainchild.

Nicely done. :D

If my memory serves me rightly Sabbath were in no way ideologues...

They chose their dark and satanic image after seeing a queue of people at the cinema waiting to see a horror movie and thought they could make money out of people's interest in the occult as well.
