LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Prince Charles has gone back to his organic roots.

Britain's heir to the throne offers a royal collection of recipes in a new cookbook that glories in the country's much maligned food and offers an intriguing insight into the tastes of his regal ancestors.

"Learn to work with nature rather than against her," the impassioned environmentalist pleads in his forward to the Duchy Originals Cookbook, which takes for its ingredients the 200 organic foods produced by his home farm company.

Charles, once mocked for admitting that he encouraged plants to grow by chatting to them, has had the last laugh.

Rebelling against what he called the "soulless, mass-produced food that had come to dominate the modern diet," he embarked on a crusade to reconnect farmer and consumer.

Duchy Originals, which started off by producing an oaten biscuit made from wheat and oats, now has a 56 million pound ($109 million) turnover with a hefty slice going to the charities he supports.

"I wanted to promote a sustainable approach to agriculture," he says. He hoped to "inspire many more people to care about what they eat and where it comes from."

The approach chimes with Britons' interest in healthier eating, a trend promoted by television chefs. The traditional dishes, compiled by writer Johnny Acton and chef Nick Sandler, were all approved by Charles and certainly echo his tastes.

The Maids of Honour tarts boast an intriguing history.

Legend has it that Henry VIII found the recipe in a locked iron chest and gave it to Anne Boleyn, one of his many ill-fated wives, who made them into a treat for the portly monarch.

Also on offer is a date and walnut cake much appreciated by his late grandmother, the Queen Mother.

A sprinkling of meat recipes also are centered on mutton. Charles has long campaigned to put the meat back on British dinner tables.

The Singapore Sling is given a new twist with a cocktail named after the royal family's Scottish Highland home. The Balmoral Fling is a mix of gin, grenadine, apple juice, Calvados and Maraschino cherries topped off with slices of green apple.

But his party-loving sons William and Harry might be a trifle disappointed by the contents of the Highgrove Strawberry Daiquiri named after Charles' country home.

It is awash in fruit -- but the recipe contains not one drop of alcohol.

Am I supposed to believe that he's actually made any of these? Obviously just putting his name on the book..... I'm all for raising money for is charity, but how much of it is going in his pocket? It should all be going to the charity!
