EE: bad news about Hilda Braid ( Nana Moon )

Post by carmelina »

Former EastEnder Hilda Braid might be suffering from dementia, it's been reported.

The 74-year-old, best known as Walford's Nana Moon, has been admitted to a private nursing home in Brighton after she apparently fell and bruised herself.

"She's having tests but she seems to have some form of dementia," a nurse at the home told The Sun.

Hilda's agent confirmed the star is "not very well" but declined to give further details, saying: "She is in a nursing home. We do not want to say any more."

The actress became a household name playing Nana Moon, the grandmother of Shane Richie's character Alfie Moon.

A year ago viewers were gripped by a storyline which saw Nana losing her sanity.

The actress was written out of the soap shortly afterwards.

Hilda once trained at the Royal Shakespeare Company and her career has spanned more than 40 years.

I thought I'd beat him to the punch :)

Seriously though, I hope her family are coping well with this and it's not too much of a strain on them.

Never watched Eastenders when she was in it, but I'll always remember her in Citizen Smith.

Night Night Nana.

Tribute to former EastEnders' star

EastEnders actress June Brown has paid a moving tribute to her former co-star and close friend Hilda Braid as she attended her funeral. Ms Braid, who acted alongside Ms Brown as Nana Moon in the show, died aged 78 on November 6 after a lengthy battle with dementia and Alzheimer's.

Family and friends gathered at Woodvale Crematorium in Brighton for a short ceremony where Ms Brown, who plays Dot Branning in the soap, spoke of her memories of the actress. The pair first met 50 years ago through a mutual friend and then resumed contact after bumping into each other at Boreham Wood Hospital, where they were both regular visitors, she said.

At the time, both were trying to break into acting and Ms Brown recalls asking her friend: "Why doesn't it happen to us?" She said Ms Braid had replied: "I think it's because we are both jobbing actresses."

But both women did go on to find success in their careers - Ms Brown in EastEnders and Ms Braid in television shows such as Citizen Smith and Man About The House. Their paths were to cross again at the end of Ms Braid's working life when she was cast as Nana Moon in the soap that had made her friend's name.

Chris Parker, who played Nana Moon's grandson Spencer in EastEnders was due to do a reading at the service but was tied up filming in America. Ms Brown said: "Chris Parker is awfully sorry not to be here. He is filming and could not get a plane back from America. He was very fond of Hilda and looked after her very well on set."
