Bridge Rescue: Walker Trapped As Crossing Opens
The woman clung on for 20 minutes after the railway bridge in Florida suddenly began to rise while she was crossing it.

A 55-year-old Florida woman was left dangling 22ft (6.7m) in the air when the railway bridge she was crossing opened. Wanda Keating McGowan had been taking part in a charity walk to raise awareness of breast cancer when she walked onto the bridge over Fort Lauderdale's New River.

Witness Philip Glazebrook told NBC6 the bridge sounds a loud alarm before it rises to warn pedestrians, but it was not clear why the woman stayed put. "This bridge is controlled from Tallahassee," he said. "So she's stuck on the bridge and she's going up. The next thing is, she's stuck; straddled like Jesus Christ."

Pictures show the terrified woman wearing a pink T-shirt grasping onto the bridge with both hands as she is waiting to be rescued. Witnesses say she somehow managed to remain calm despite having to wait 20 minutes to be brought down by firefighters with a 24ft (7.3m) ladder.

Other walkers taking part in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer charity walk gave relieved cheers as she returned to the ground. Ms Gowan, who is not thought to have been injured, later praised her rescue team with a message of thanks on Facebook. "To all the firemen and police officers. THANK YOU. YOU SAVED MY LIFE. ALL GOOD THINGS TO YOU," she wrote.

Worker clings on for life after angry child SLASHES safety rope because he couldn't hear TV
Gareth Roberts
Aug 30, 2014</center>
A telly-mad ten-year-old left a horrified handyman clinging on for life – after cutting through the worker's safety rope as he toiled away 100ft from the ground. Liu Mai was fitting lights with an electric drill outside the eighth-floor apartment of goggle-box gawper Tang Chu. But he got the shock of his life when he looked up to see a knife-wielding youngster sawing through his rope after the noise affected his TV watching. The worker begged the berserk boy to stop but he carried on cutting as Mai feared for his life.

He said: "I was using an electric drill to fit security lights to the outside of the building when I felt my safety rope shaking. I looked up to see what was wrong. Then I saw the boy cutting the rope with a knife. I shouted at him to stop but he didn't listen and soon after, the rope was broken. I was petrified. I thought I was sure to fall, but the boy just stood and watched me."

Liu was left dangling 100ft above the ground in south-western China's Guizhou province with just a single fixed rope to cling on to. Workmate Zhang Pan heard his screams for help and called in firemen, who winched terrified Liu up to the 11th floor.

A fire service spokesman said: "This could have had fatal consequences. The boy didn't think about his actions. The worker was left dangling and was holding on for dear life. Luckily we were able to save the man and winch him onto a balcony to safety. The boy clearly thought his cartoons were more important than someone's life. He said that the builders were too loud and it was distracting him as he tried to watch his favourite cartoons. He has since apologised for his actions."

Dad Tang Peng said: "He just didn't think. We have apologised and bought the man a new rope. We also gave him a good talking too and explained what he did was very dangerous. He has promised he will not do something similar again. I think we may also need to take him for some anger management therapy."
