brian haw violently assaulted then arrested at downing street today

a bloody-faced and frightened brian haw (minus hat)

a number of people were milling around the road outside downing street where a group of around a dozen had laid down with linked arms in the road.

without warnings the territorial support group moved in and began violently pushing and man-handling people to the pavement. one young woman was grabbed round the throat and dragged. others were pushed from behind. brian was miving backwards towards the pavement with a camera to his face when officer U1019 lunged at him deliberately and without provocation. the blow was aimed directly at brian's face and pushed his camera into his cheek causing a deep wound.

shortly afterwards, brian was snatched from the crowd and taken to a police van, from which witnesses heard him screaming. after several minutes he was dragged out of the van looking very alarmed and frightened, and taken to another cell van where he was driven to belgravia police station.

supporters there are worried for his safety, but after an hour of no news, they were told that he was being taken to see the prison doctor. there are concerns about his treatment during that hour.

steve jago, on seeing the snatch, pushed forward to try to help brian, but was immediately pounced on by four heavy tsg thugs who violently dragged him to the ground, sat on him, and aggressively hand-cuffed him before apprently arresting him for an unknown offence.

in an afternoon of filming, at no time did i see a single act of violence towards the police from the peaceful protestors, and yet police used completely disproportionate and aggressive tactics to disperse and control peaceful sit-downs and blockades. i saw a 61 year old woman being dragged wihout any heed for 'health and safety' and dumped on the pavement. another elderly man was thrown over his bicycle (despite having recently had an accident leaving him in considerable pain)

there were several other arrests this afternoon, mainly for obstruction and public order offences. one person was arrested for 'organising an unauthorised protest'

attached photo was taken by nuj journalist terence bunch and remains his copyright although he has kindly allowed publication here - for any commercial usgae please contact him via

i'll be editing a short film of this afternoon soon

they're just bastard cowards - beating up Haw is like beating up your granny. I hope the fucker concerned is attacked in the street and battered to a pulp. I'd happily do it myself.

If anyone reading this is thinking 'oh there's always one bad apple' to justify not all cops being bad - keep it to yourself please. Brian Haw is the guy who's been running the one-man protest outside Parliament against the war in Iraq and attacking him is just plain twisted.

Had to look up who he was as I had not heard about him. An interesting fellow.

It is terrible that he was attacked. He's done nothing wrong whatsoever.

there doesn't seem to be a single news source other than indymedia reporting this... no surprise there. They don't want to be speaking out against injustice do they?

Here's the webpage dedicated to a documentary about the law these thugs used to remove the peaceful protest.

I agree, I hadn't heard this till now. The power of the Main Stream Media has to be broken.

It is now mentioned on http://www.georgegalloway.com & http://www.spiderednews.com/

Why the h*ll do the police pull this stuff? "Unauthorized protest." Gee, I wonder why people feel a need to protest without "authorization" from the authorities.

Storm Troopers, pure and simple.

We are well into Orwellian practices when "protests" have to be authorized.

A protest is against things going wrong, generally items controlled by the government. So of-course the government doesn't want to authorize them.

It's really annoying that he's not going to press charges - this shit happens all the time and it needs a case that would be in the public eye to highlight the problem.

I agree. The police use the law against individuals, so why not use it against obvious abuse of power? I hope someone can talk him 'round.

Peace protestor marches to High Wycombe
By Tom Pochciol

PEACE campaigner Brian Haw is currently walking to High Wycombe along the London Road as part of his journey to Oxford. The activist from Redditch, Worcestershire has camped in Parliament Square for the past six years in protest of the Iraq war. He is marching to Oxford Union to debate the motion "This House Would Under no Circumstances Fight for Queen and Country".

Mr Haw said: "It's a bit of leg work and a bit of shoe leather - not the biggest contribution to the cause really. People are making fortunes out of this war and all of us are paying for it. How many more of our kids have to die?"

Mr Haw will be staying in High Wycombe tonight, before setting off tomorrow from the town centre on the next step of his journey. The debate will take place on February 7. Mr Haw will be proposing the motion with George Galloway MP among others, and will be opposed by Colonel Bob Andrews and MP Nick Harvey.

more power to him!
