If america didn't have its fingers in so many international matters I would just ignore it for everything but the tv shows. They can keep their burgers and 99% of the movies, which are about the only other things which spring to mind that they export, apart from WAR of course!
I'd say this result will genuinely affect the way americans are treated internationally - "so you guys finally got a clue?, well done".

I just read about this guy being the first ever socialist to be elected to the senate... brilliant. All I've ever heard of socialism in america is that it is treated in the same way as communism, yet the two are so vastly different.
Here's a quote from his site on the Patriot Act :
"All Americans want to protect our country from terrorism. But the way to do this is not by abandoning the principles that have guided our Nation for more than 200 years. The war on terrorism must not be used as an excuse to trample on our civil liberties and rights.
The right to privacy, free expression, legal representation, and not being subjected to unwarranted searches and seizures are just a few of the liberties which are being threatened and abused by the Bush Administration."
I'm impressed - god bless socialism! http://bernie.house.gov
I see also that Keith Ellison in Minnesota became the first Muslim elected to the House of Representatives. That's a great step forward, but why the hell has it taken so long? |

It sounds like there's going to be quite a few recounts, and they're after saying there's a lot of votes not counted yet.
Is it because all the votes haven't been counted that it's still D-49 R-49 and 2 undecided for control the senate? I'm not sure how this all works.
They also said the results might not be known till christmas because lawyers will get involved for each side. |

Why is it we can put a man on the moon but we can't get the voting counts done without lawyers! |

They said there were a lot of glitches. I think they had some problems in areas with the voting machines again. |

They got rid of the voting machines here this year. It was weird doing the paper forms. I felt like I was back in high school taking and exam! |

Virginia and Montana are going to have recounts, but Jeff Tubin is on CNN right now saying it'll be useless because it's done electronically and there's no paper trail to go by, and all they'd be basically doing is getting the numbers off a machine again.
It's odd seeing Foley's name. It must have been hard for people to tick that name off, even though they weren't actually voting for him. |

That's very true. I didn't even think of that. |

Rumsfeld handed in his resignation They were saying he might but I didn't think he would.
Bush didn't accept it of course but I think that's just a show of support. |

I just saw that on the news here - they were describing it as The White House's first submission to the Democrats, and it's quite a start if you ask me. Good riddance to the bastard. |

So true, Sky! I had wondered whether or not there would be a lot of recounts with so many close victories.
I realize everything is different in every country, but we still vote here with pencil and paper and it seems to work fairly well! |
