ah see, I thought that too - but according to "arithmeticians" it's not. I suppose it's probably down to 1 not being able to be divided into one piece.

It's pretty simple why 1 isn't prime. I was always taught because it was by definition:

An integer greater than one is called a prime number if its only positive divisors are one and itself.
