Do you have to do blood tests in the UK prior to getting married? We have to here and I am not exactly sure what they check or test for, but maybe that is one of the things, to make sure you are not related.

They don't do them in every State anymore Spurs. I didn't have to get it and neither did my sister, nor my brother.

Amazing in the HIV/AIDS world that they no longer do this. See, that's how long it has been since I have applied for a marriage license.... Laughing

It really is interesting that they don't. I guess they figure people will do it on their own.

I think it's probably something to do with freedoms - I can imagine that there were protests from some people about being forced to take tests against their will.

"Many states have done away with mandatory premarital physical exams or blood tests. Some states still require for venereal diseases, and a few also test for rubella (also known as German Measles, a disease that is very dangerous to fetuses), tuberculosis, and sickle-cell anemia."
Like I said, some states still do the blood tests. You can find out more here

thanks skylace

spursfan, they have a bit on that site about aids/hiv

"Due to the rise in HIV and AIDS, many states now require that parties applying for a marital license must be offered an HIV test and/or must be provided with information on AIDS and tests available. Presently, no states requires a mandatory premarital HIV/AIDS test."

Thanks for the info, Luke. I had no idea that they had even stopped doing it.

Since so many people are having sex outside of marriage, living together before getting married, etc., there's not much point of making all this testing mandatory. I'm also guessing that they feel as adults choosing to get married, it's up to you to make the decision about getting involved with someone who might have these sorts of infections. Is the law going to tell people with HIV/AIDS that they can't get married just because they've got it. And let's face it, there are still some people out there who are married for convenience and might choose not to have a sexual relationship. Are you going to deny them marriage because they might have some sort of sexually transmitted infection?

yeah i wonder if they did test positive if they'd be stopped from getting married? i mean they could still go on and have sex and have children. maybe its just because so few people have those tests that anywhere they see they can encourage people to they do. mark fowler would never have been able to marry gill if that was the case! wink
