My grandmother was married at 13 and had her first child at 15. That was in the 30's! You guessed it - RURAL area.Skylace wrote:You mentioned the 50s, I'll mention even further back to just a hundred years ago when girls were married off at 14, 15, 16 and expected to start having children.
Now we make jokes about it such as movies like Failure to Launch. Our society has lengthened childhood considerable since the 1930s and 40s. If we had still be single in our late teens and early 20s our parents would have been sweating it.
In Gail Sheehy's books (the info is interesting even if her technique is flawed) Passages and New Passages she discusses the stages of adult life. Originally "starting" at 18-21 in her 1976 book, the concept of the beginning of adulthood was blown out of the water by the time the second book came out in 1996. In 20 years society shifted how people "grow up." We are taking longer to "grow up" mentally and attitudinally and much longer to die. What caused that shift? I'm not sure ...
I agree ... BEING grown up and ACTING/FEELING grown up are two different things. And I would have to say that if said 14 year old girl WAS driven to start a family then THAT is a seperate kettle of fish that's needs to be examined!I tend to believe it leans more towards society. And when a 14 year old girl sees a 17 year old boy, she isn't driven to start a family (most of the time) instead she has bragging rights to her friends and feels more "grown up"

Back to the original post regarding the sentencing for the 2 schmucks ...
How can you possibly mistake a 10 year old for a 16 year old? I have a 10 year old daughter. She looks nothing like a 16 year old regardless of how she tries to act and dress. Either he is super evil or he is an absolute moron. (or the girl has hormonal issues)The appeal judges were told on behalf of Fenn that he had "genuinely" believed his victim was 16.
Go for the evil ... this was an attack in the park .. I don't think he cared how old she was.
This is also why I think the Judges should have jailed him for longer than the other case which was consentual and the girl was older.
Actually, I don't see anyone having commented about my initial posting in this thread about the relative nature of the crimes should have led the judges to give more jail time to the rapist who attacked the 10 year old in the park.
ANY COMMENTS anyone ? Am I losing it ?
