Here's Channel 4's offical statement on the racisim thing from Digital Spy:

"No overt racial abuse", says Channel 4
Day 15, 17:56 UTC - by James Welsh

Channel 4 has issued a statement regarding the ongoing allegations of racism and bullying in the Big Brother house.

The statement in full:

"To date there has been no overt racial abuse or racist behaviour directed against Shilpa Shetty within the Big Brother house. However there has undoubtedly been a cultural and class clash between her and three of the British females in the house.

"Unambiguous racist behaviour and language is not tolerated under any circumstances in the Big Brother house. Housemates are constantly monitored and Channel 4 would intervene if a clear instance of this arose.

"It is in the nature of Big Brother that conflicts arise and housemates are encouraged to resolve issues among themselves.

"Shilpa has not voiced any concerns of racial abuse to Big Brother. Housemates have access to support from Big Brother at all times.

"The issue of whether there is racism in the CBB House has been discussed on Channel 4's companion programmes CBBLB and BB's BM and a range of views has been aired, including those of BB viewers."

that was a good read, but I don't agree with Germain Greer's point at all. Nobody can act-up for that long in the knowledge that they are consciously creating an atmosphere of racism and be sane. And if there's one thing I doubt Shilpa is, it's insane.

One thing I did learn from the article is that she's actually Tamil - I'd assumed she was high-level Indian.

You're right and I don't agree with his point either... just thought it would be interesting to read the article mentioned. I don't think Shilpa's putting anything on.

I actually knew that she was Tamil.... it's in her bio on her website:

When you watch tonight's show you'll see some real crap thrown about - here's one screengrab... that Jade should be shot like the rabid mutt she is!

Although I'm sure she's a very nice person, Cleo has absolutely infuriated me!!! Her "staying in the middle" is going beyond ridiculous. How can all of this happen between Jade & Shilpa and Cleo doesn't say anything?

I just can't believe that no one in that house has said, "Alright, let's have a talk, air our issues and try to come to an understanding." It's like none of those "celebrities" has a friggin' backbone, and it's driving me crazy!!! :x

I know, and I think someone should have stepped in and told Jade to calm down, stop using foul language to try to make her point, and speak in a calm and prudent manner. Shilpa never needs to raise her voice to get her point across. Jade is as classy as her mother is. Gee!

Spot on, pirty. The apple doesn't fall from the tree, does it?

In reference to the article by Ms Greer, one could reply that even if "Shilpa vs Jade's Army" is not a racist issue, it is a matter of bullying.

I am happy that Dirk, Jermaine and Ian have called Jade a bully. I just wish someone would sit her down and tell her so. Even Danielle confessed to being a "follower" instead of thinking as an individual. I truly hope that Danielle speaks with Shilpa and apologises for laughing whilst Jade was verbally abusing Shilpa.

One hell of an orchard then huh...

Sorry & all that but no matter where I have lived in the world I have seen instances like this happening.

Ignorance & Intolerance of other peoples cultures & ethnical backgrounds will always be a problem, throw a bunch of no class, no brain bigots who were dragged up (not raised) by bigots into a house & lock the doors & this is what we will get every time.....

Once again I ask "what about Jack"?
He fuels the fire, he continues to fan the flames...
Is it because it makes better "media" to blame a group of all women rather than a cross section of peoples?

===================================================

I was relieved to see Shilpa stand up to Jade last night, she didn't quite go down to Jade's level, but she did put a decent slap on Jade's ego.

Shocking how Danielle got away with the "She should fuck off back home" & "She can't even speak proper English" all in the space of 45 seconds...
How could Endomol let her get away with a lame excuse for saying these things?
OK, they questioned her in the diary room, shame we didn't get to see the entire conversation... :(
But her pathetic excuse & the looks on her face over that time in there show her to be worse than Jade as far as I am concerned.

==================================================

Nobody explained what the 'dressing gown tie' (at least I think that's what it was) across the doors was about...
It seems as if Jade, Jack, Jo & Danielle had sectioned themselves off from the others.

I have read elsewhere & heard on TV & in a few clips that people are pissed at the other housemates for not getting involved.
I am sure that these others would love to say something but would rather keep their 'public' face...
You can't blame them, it's not their fight & taking sides in what is potentialy a race war or other form of 'hate war' could do as much bad for the individual as it could do good.

As Dirk & Jermaine were saying yesterday (yesterday's show), imagine if this was happening in the USA...
OMG... it certainly wouldn't have been allowed to go on this long, the show would have been yanked off air (no pun intended with yank) & 3 or 4 people would be sitting in a dif' kind of seclusion from the public...

Well, at least Shilpa has voiced herself that this is now becoming a racist thing.

a fine analysis there 6ul - and I'd agree with all of it I think.

The way that Danielle behaved like a stupid schoolgirl who's been hauled up in front of the headmaster said it all for me. She just made up an excuse on the spot about it being something she'd never do again, but it just seemed like she was looking for an out rather than actually being sorry for what she said - cos she obviously realised how it sounded when it was said back to her.

Thing is, there's probably a lot of people in the public who agree with all the racism etc and if anything this has basically exposed what they are really like. At first I said it was probably just ignorance on her part, but as it's gone on I reckon it's just plain and simple bigtory.

As for Jade - she needs shooting before she breeds!

I'm glad to hear that Shilpa has at least said that she now feels it's a racist thing..... haven't watched the show yet, but I was hoping that would happen.

I'm torn between wishing some of the other housemates would step in and voice their concern (isn't not speaking out about racism, just as bad?) and thinking that it's not really their battle (and they should just support Shilpa to be strong).

Either way, I think 6ULDV8 was right in saying that it wouldn't have gone on this long in the US...... but I suspect that would be for fear of losing sponsors not out of respect of doing the right thing.

Jade's grandad - it's almost like it was based on him with his wife-beating, sovvy rings and tatoos, and I've no doubt he loved the Qween Mam too...

Channel 4's latest statement (this just came out a few minutes ago on Digital Spy):

In full: Statement from C4 CEO Duncan
Day 16, 14:47 UTC - by James Welsh

Channel 4 CEO Andy Duncan has issued a statement on the Celebrity Big Brother controversy. The statement in full:

"In the seven years it has been on air Big Brother has seldom been far from the headlines.

"The reason it commands so much attention, intentionally or unintentionally, is that it goes to the heart of who we are as individuals and as a society.

"The latest series of Celebrity Big Brother has strayed into particularly controversial territory – the issue of racism and whether or not it remains ingrained in British attitudes despite all the progress we have apparently made towards becoming a truly multi-cultural society.

"The level of complaint and comment shows the programme has touched a real nerve.

"The debate has been heated, the viewing has at times been uncomfortable but, in my view, it is unquestionably a good thing that the programme has raised these issues and provoked such a debate. These attitudes, however distasteful, do persist – we need to confront that truth.

"What constitutes racism is a complex question. We have been monitoring extremely carefully events in the house and have reached the view that we cannot with certainty say that the comments directed at Shilpa have been racially motivated or whether they stem from broader cultural and social differences.

"We have already intervened with Danielle and, as viewers will see tonight, again with Jade where we felt their comments might be construed to have racist overtones. Producers also spoke to Shilpa today who said she did not feel that behaviour towards her was racist.

"We will not hesitate to intervene again if apparently racist behaviour occurs.

"Big Brother’s unique strength is that it is ultimately the public who will decide whether or not the behaviour of certain contestants has been unacceptable.

"Tomorrow night Jade and Shilpa will face the public vote. The British public has the opportunity to cut through the claim and counter-claim and pass its judgement on the events of the last week.

In the last 25 years Channel 4 has undoubtedly played a major role as a broadcaster to inform and educate viewers about issues of race. This is a role that I intend Channel 4 to continue playing."

Cheap executive rhetoric. This git needs to cop on to what's really happening. I'm sure they see it for what it is but they're trying to save their arses from further condemnation and possible lawsuits.

The thousands that have complained as well as the viewing public aren't stupid. I've not seen the shows in the last couple days but from what I've read in here it sounds like it's getting worse and not better, and it also sounds apparent that Channel 4 is doing sweet fanny adams about the situation and will let her be further humiliated and bullied.....all for the sake of ratings.

I don't know how these executive c*nts can sleep at night knowing what Shilpa is up against and has to wake up to daily, but I guess the £ signs in their eyes make sleep come easy.

I just heard on the news that Carphone Warehouse have withdrawn their sponsorship of CBB with immediate effect - that's gonna cost them a good chunk I'm sure, but I'm guessing it will be offset by the amount of people who will be voting... I also hear that OFCOM have now had over 30000 complaints - which is mad really.
